Keyword-Discovery-ProcessStart the Primary Keyword discovery process as follows:

  • Enter a Seed Keyword Phrase into your Keyword Research Tool. (Be signed into a Google Account when using the Google AdWords Keyword Planner Tool).
  • Filter results for
    • English, US
    • >=low limit determined by the KeyWord Profit Formula. (800 to 5000 is typical).
    • CPC of >= $1.00.
    • medium to high AdWords Competition (indicates a lucrative buying market).
    • Exact Match.
    • 3 words or more for long tail Keyword Phrases.
  • Save the list to a spreadsheet .csv file.
  • Add the list generated by your auto-suggestion tools to your .csv file.
  • Use Amazon > > Books “Look Inside” feature to view tables of contents and indices of books in your niche for additional keyword ideas and add them to your file.
  • Do a Google search for each Exact Match keyword (in quotes) to visit the top ranking sites and snag their Keywords if they have any.
    • Do a Right-Click and View Source, then search for meta name=”keywords” to copy the content to your file. Example: meta name=”keywords” content=”shoe, shoes, shoee, shos, footwear, sneakers, zapatos”.
  • Do another Google search including the words “incoming search terms”, “recent search terms”, “popular search terms” or “random search terms” along with the keyword to see what comes up.
  • Enter your expanded Keyword list of at least 25-30 good potential keywords into your Keyword Research Tool and filter as above and add that .csv list to your spreadsheet file.
  • Check search trends for your Keyword list with Google Trends (formerly Google Insights).
    • Ditch Keywords with declining trends or relatively low volume at the peak of seasonal spikes.
  • Do a Google search for remaining exact keyword (in quotes).
    • Look to see that the results page is full of Google Ads and ditch Keywords that don’t seem to be supporting many. (NOTE: may use free SpyFu Classic for this.)
    • Without committing click fraud, make a note of what products those Ads are offering on their landing pages.
    • Look at the titles on the ranking pages to determine how many are intentionally trying to rank for that keyword.

We are now ready to do some Competition Analysis on our list of Primary Keywords.
