Ping Your Site

December 31st, 2023

The primary purpose behind pinging your site is to alert the search engine robots that you have new content for them to index. Like ringing the dinner bell for GoogleBot. LOL

WordPress used to automatically ping your site each time you update a post or page. They wisely changed that behavior with WordPress version 3.5

Ping-your-site

Pinging too much or too often may get you flagged as a spammer so do not ping a web property more than once per hour.

Also consider that we will be pinging a variety of different web properties as we progress along and this will require the use of a service anyway. They won’t all be WordPress sites.

Therefore, it is recommended to use

to notify 1000’s of indices any time you create a new web property or add new content to your site.

If you really want to use the built-in WordPress pinger function before WordPress ver. 3.5, you will also want to include a larger list of ping sites than the default list.

A good short list would be:

Of course, you will find many others and may add to this list but be careful about duplicates. For example pingomatic will submit your site to up to 19 ping sites. It would be very easy to start spamming!

Remember these processes for Social Bookmarking and Pinging your Web Properties. You will need to repeat them often as you start to drive traffic… and remember to ping bookmarks as well!

Next, we talk about RSS.
